back when i was watching the Olympics- I started doodling on Photoshop- The sky- the temples...China's amazing aesthetic was invading my brain..and I liked it. I was very happy about the idea- the moon festival when chinese kids light floating candles... I was happy with the non-typical of me composition... But I didn't sketch first-I was just winging it. And then I wanted to add the kids... these have to be version 7 and 8 of the kids..... usually, I draw the characters first - then have to create the enviroment for them.. usually producing a not so cohesive image... Here - I did the opposite, stepped out of the comfort zone.. and it's driving me CRAZYYYYYYY! Version 7 :
These are very Small World looking- way simple. And I'm playing with texture and brushes- and they look like felt...
Version 8:
I tell ya- i'm not happy with either... and you should have seen 1,2,3,4 and 5- (6- I don't want to talk about)
Uhhhhhhhhhg.
I'm going to get off of the computer and back to the sketchbook.- Scan in a drawing that I'm happy with. If it ain't broke...

Oh you'll work it out! I can see it coming together very nicely... I experience the same thing all the time and I always feel like I'm in the gutter... then I tell myself "you can do this" and when you really think about it, you can
it's a beautiful idea, and the composition is very pleasing... you've got what it takes, and it will finish nicely
I like the way you illustrated the characters more in the 8th one...the expressions and I love the hair on the girl in red....but I like more how the characters are interacting more with the scenery in your number 7......best of luck and don't get too frustrated!! I really like where it is going and am excited to see what you finally come up with!
I think no. 7 is wonderful Kelly! I really love those 2 characters and their poses too. The background is just lovely.
I think version 7 is coming along nicely. Seems like maybe you can alter or add a few things, or maybe it just needs a little more detail. The concept is great, I like the atmosphere and the kids' interaction. I'd like to see how this turns out... :O) Best of luck, you're doing a great job!
Hmmm.. I really like version 7. I know what you mean about never being quite satisfied, though. But that's a good thing! Keeps you pushing for more. :-)
Thanks for all of the input- I think I will work on 7- their poses help the zig-zag of the composition. 8 is just too stiff. I'll post it when i'm done.
These are really wonderful, Kelly! When I just looked at the pictures (without reading the commentary), I thought it was a two-part series... kids at the lake (#7) and then again later as a young couple (#8). The body language for both illustrations is perfect... a young couple would be kind of stiff at first.
Really love the washed feel of these-- stunning work.
I really like the poses in the top, but also the faces in the lower. The water and silhouette look great in both!
version 7 is sweet! the background is real pretty, and i do love the reflection on the water. and the kids look perfect in the picture. looking forward to seeing the lighted candles in your finished work!
Beautiful work kelly! Finish it. I want to see.
